Information about the behavior of patching Adobe and Mozilla products with Protect

$
0
0

Purpose

This article is meant to provide information about how Protect provides security updates for Adobe and Mozilla products incrementally.

Resolution

When a vendor supports multiple branches or versions of a product Protect does not support moving to the latest version until the previous branch has been end of life (EOL).

Example:

For Adobe Flash, if versions 10 and 11 are still supported (Flash 9 & below are EOL) Protect offers all flash 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 to the latest version of 10 as a security update. Protect only offers the latest Flash 11 security patch to older versions of 11 that are currently installed. This behavior is in place because not all customers wish to move to the latest version.

In this instance if you currently had Flash 10 installed you would need to use the "Software Distribution" scanning and deployment option within Protect to update directly to the latest version of Flash 11.

This behavior can apply to all Adobe and Mozilla products that are supported for security patching within Protect.

Additional Information

If you need to see how to perform a software distribution scan and deployment please view the "Perform a Software Deployment" video at the following site: http://www.shavlik.com/training-on-demand.aspx

"Copy only" of a patch when using a distribution server will not copy patch files to target systems

$
0
0

Symptoms

When deploying from the console in Protect you choose the Deployment Configuration option to "Copy files to selected machine(s) but do not install", and you are using a deployment template configured to use a distribution server. However, patch files fail to copy to the target system in the C:\Windows\Propatches\Patches directory when you click "Deploy".

Cause

The reason that there are no patch files copied to the target system is because of the way distribution servers are used. Protect uses a map file that is copied to the target system along with a batch and confiuration file so that deployments know where to copy files from a distribution server. Because the batch file only runs when installation is initiated - it never runs for a "copy only", and because of this the patch files are never copied from the distribution server to the target system.

Resolution

There are two things you can do:

1) The best workaround is to choose a deployment template that does not employ the use of a distribution server for using the option to "Copy files to selected machin(s) but do not install". This will allow the patch files to be copied directly from the Protect console system to the target system(s).

2) Manually go out to the target system and run the batch file that was created in C:\Windows\Propatches\Install. This will run the process to copy the patch file(s) from the distribution server to the target system.

The patch MS03-014 is missing after deployment

$
0
0

If Outlook Express has not been installed on a system, MS03-014 may appear as 'missing', however, the patch will not install.  This is a known issue when trying to install Outlook Express patches on systems where Outlook Express has been specifically removed from the Internet Explorer installation.

If Outlook Express is not installed, the system is not vulnerable to the specified issue, and thus can be ignored from the scan results (either right click and 'hide patch item', right click and select 'Modify criticality-Ignore' or create a patch group containing this patch and specifically filter to ignore this patch group in a scan template).

How the Shavlik Scheduler & Microsoft Scheduler work

$
0
0

Scheduled Scans

When doing a scheduled scan, The Protect Console will schedule the event on the console. Everything is done from the console. No logs would be shown on the target machine.

Scheduled Deployments

When you click deploy, Protect will copy the patches you selected for deployment (Using NetBios Ports TCP 137-139 or TCP 445) to C:\Windows\ProPatches\Patches file on the target machine. It also creates and copies a batch file and a cfg file in C:\Windows\ProPatches\Install on the target machine.

Protect handles Deployments 2 different ways depending on what you have selected  in Tools-Options-Scheduling. The default is the Shavlik Scheduler.

Shavlik Scheduler

When the patches, bat, and cfg files are copied to the Propatches folder, the Scheduler is set during this time when to run the task. This can be verified in the C:\Windows\ProPatches\Scheduler\Scheduler.log. Scheduled tasks when made with the Shavlik Scheduler may be viewed on the Protect Console. This can be viewed by going under Manage-> Scheduled Tasks. (If your tasks are not showing up here, see this document http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23053)

When the scheduled deployment time occurs, the Shavlik Scheduler runs the .bat file created in C:\Windows\ProPatches\Install

You can view the deployment status by opening up View -> Deployment Tracker or Pressing F9. The ST Remote Scheduler Service reports back to the Console on Port TCP 3121.

**Note- If for some reason the Shavlik Scheduler fails to schedule the task, it will by default fail-over and use the Microsoft Scheduler for this specific job.

Microsoft Scheduler

After the patches, bat and cfg files are copied to the Propatches folder, the Protect console will schedule the task on the Target Machine using the Microsoft Schedulerfor the desired scheduled date.

If you would like to view this job, you will need to view this on the Target Machine. On the target machine, open the task scheduler. You will then click on Task Scheduler Library and see the job listed.

**Note if you use the Microsoft Scheduler, your jobs will not be listed under Manage->Scheduled Tasks.

When the scheduled deployment time occurs, the Microsoft Scheduler runs the .bat file created in C:\Windows\ProPatches\Install

You may still view data regarding the deployment by opening up View -> Deployment Tracker or Pressing F9

Scheduled task log status shows: -2146232576

0

Symptoms

Jobs will be scheduled but never run and in the scheduled task log it shows a status of -2146232576.

Cause

This happens because the ST Remote Scheduler Service is dependent on the Remote Procedure Call Service and that service is not running.

Resolution

Start the Remote Prodedure Call Service.

How to: Managing License seat usage with Shavlik Protect

$

Overview on how license seats are tracked/assigned with Protect

From Protect Help (Contents > Installation and Setup > Getting Started > How Licenses are Tracked):

When a patch deployment is performed, Shavlik Protect records the machine name in the database if it does not already exist.  From there, the number of remaining seats available for deployment is reduced by one for each target. If you elect to use Shavlik Protect Agent, each agent machine is allocated a license and also counts against the total number of license seats available. If the same machine is managed in both an agentless and agent-based manner, that machine is counted only once. Similarly, when scanning virtual machines, a machine is counted only once even if it is scanned both in online (powered on) mode and offline (powered off) mode.

Additional Information

When a deployment seat is assigned to a system, it will be assigned to that system for 45 days as long as the system is not deployed to again.

Deployment seats are not 'assigned' to a system when a scan is performed. Only when a deployment or agent installation takes place.

How to view the number of license seats used and systems currently assigned a license seat

Basic view of license usage

To see an overview of all current license usage for a Protect console, go to Help > About Shavlik Protect. Under 'Licensed Capabilities' you will see some useful information such as your expiration date, the total number of license seats you have available, the number of deployment seats used, and the features you have enabled.

Example:

Capture.JPG

Obtaining list of systems currently assigned a license seat

There is a report that can be run within Protect to obtain a list of systems that are currently assigned a license seat.

To obtain this report in Protect, go to Tools > Create Report. In the drop-down next to 'Select report to view:', choose "Seat License Status". Then click the 'Generate report' button. The Seat License Status report will provide a listing of the following information; Number of total license seats available, number of license seats used, number of license seats remaining, and a full list of all systems that currently have a license seat assigned.

Example of Seat License Status report:

Capture1.JPG

If you have used all your license seats

If you have used all your available license seats and need additional seats here are your options:

1. If you have used all your license seats and require additional seats to continue patching or installing agents you will need to get in contact with our sales team. They will be able to add seats to your license key.

Contact for sales team:

Phone: 800-690-6911, option 1

Email: sales@shavlik.com

2. If you are renaming machines or cycling old/new machines in your network this can cause you to run out of license seats (since Protect assigns a license seat to machines by machine name for 45 days). If this is the case you should contact support and provide your license key for a workaround.

Please view this document http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23088 to review how the Shavlik Scheduler works.

Step 1

Please verify under Tools-Options-Scheduler that the Shavlik Scheduler is selected.

Step 2

Please open the Protect GUI and then go to Tools > Options > Logging and change logging to “All” for both user interface and services.

*Note- If you are unable to enable logging via the GUI see doc: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-22938

Step 3

Clear out the old logs, so we can reproduce the issue and recreate new logs to view the latest data

On the Protect Console Machine

1. Close the Protect GUI.

Stop the services:

For Protect 8.X, the services are: VMware vCenter Protect Console Service & Shavlik Remote Scheduler Service

For Protect 9.X the services are: Shavlik Protect Console Service & St Remote Scheduler Service

2. Delete all the logs from:

Vista & Later: C:\ProgramData\Shavlik Technologies\Logs

Earlier OS’s: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Shavlik Technologies\Logs

3. Start services and open the Protect GUI.

On the Target Server

Browse to C:\Windows\ProPatches and erase CL5.log, dplyevts.log, and Safereboot.log in that folder. * Note, they all might not be created.

Browse to C:\Windows\ProPatches\Scheduler and erase Scheduler.log

Step 4

Please reboot the Protect Console Machine and the Target server.

Step 5

If you are having problems scheduling deployments on 1 machine, please uninstall and reinstall the scheduler on the Target server. http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-2222

If you are having problems scheduling deployments on all machines, please uninstall and reinstall the scheduler on the Protect Console Machine. After you do this you will need to do a Security Patch scan against the Protect Console Machine to have the results show again. http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-2222

If you are having problems with quite a lot of scheduled machines but not all, and you do not want to uninstall/reinstall manually, please see this guide on creating a custom action to uninstall/reinstall the scheduler on multiple machines.  http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23009

Step 6

Set the logs to verbose on the target server. Please do this by following this guide. http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23048

Step 7

Please to a rescan, and a do a scheduled deployment for 5 minutes into the future to 1 target machine.

*Note please also check the date set. It defaults to 24 hours into the future.

If there are still Problems – Follow steps 8-10

Step 8

Take screenshots of any errors that pop up.

Step 9

Gather the logs on the Protect Console Patch Server here:

Windows 7, 8, 2008, 2012 & Vista: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

Earlier OS’s: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

Gather the logs on the Target Server here:

- C:\Windows\ProPatches and gather CL5.log, dplyevts.log, and Safereboot.log in that folder

- C:\Windows\ProPatches\Scheduler\ and gather the Scheduler.log

Step 10

Please send the screenshots and both sets of logs back to Shavlik Support. You may contact support by opening up a case at the Smart Service Contact Portal, or by calling into support and having them open a case for you. here is the link to the contact information http://www.shavlik.com/support/contact/

Please also have the answers to the following questions when you contact support:

  • Does the patch you are trying to deploy show up in C:\Windows\ProPatches\Patches
  • In the C:\Windows\ProPatches\Install folder, is there any .bat files listed during the time of your scheduled scan? (If there are, please send the.bat file to support as well.)
  • What happens when you manually run the target patch found in C:\Windows\ProPatches\Patches? Does it throw any errors? This is most likely a problem with your environment where something previously did not get installed or uninstalled correctly. Please send the screenshot of these errors as well.

Issue:

The scheduler does not successfully launch the deployment batch file and the following error is seen within the Scheduler.log file in the C:\Windows\ProPatches\Scheduler folder.

Error:
AcquireCreds failed: 0x8009030d

Cause:

The certificate or encryption key is out of date or incorrect on the target machine.

Resolution:

1. Launch the registry editor by running the ‘regedit’ command from the run application.

regedit.jpg

2. Navigate to and delete the registry key corresponding to the Protect version you are running.
Note: It is highly recommended that a registry backup is created prior to altering.

    Protect 8x:

    32-bit machines: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Shavlik\Scheduler\pk

    64-bit machines: HKey_Local_Machine\Wow6432Node\Software\Shavlik\Scheduler\pk

    Protect 9x:

    32-bit machines: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Scheduler\pk

    64-bit machines: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Wow6432Node\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Scheduler\pk

3. Attempt to redeploy the patches. This process will fix the certificate or encryption key and the scheduler should now work as designed.

Immediate Deployment stays as scheduled in Deployment Tracker on Protect Console.

$

Symptom

When the customer deploys an immediate scan, and the patches copy to the target machine, and the .bat and .cfg copy to the C:\Windows\Propatches\Install directory, but the deployment never starts.

Cause

Something is in use on port 5120.

This can be verified by seeing the following error in the C:\Windows\Propatches\Sscheduler\Scheduler.log

"SchedulerServer.cpp:51: Bind failed on port 5120: Error 10048: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted."

This can be verified by running the following command on the target machine in a cmd window. netstat -b

This will show a list of ports and what program is using those ports.

Solution

This can be solved by changing changing the 3rd party program's port usage, or change Shavlik's Port usage.

This is done by going to Tools-Options-Scheduler and choosing a new port. *Note. This port will need to be opened on all target machines now.

Understanding patch severity in a Shavlik Protect patch scan and why it may differ from Windows Update

$
0
0

Purpose

This article provides information about how patch scans with Protect may differ from Windows Update scans, specifically concerning patch severity.

Overview

Microsoft publishes severity information with each bulletin. The Shavlik Protect interface displays the Microsoft severity for each patch. Each Microsoft Bulletin includes an overall Maximum Severity Rating listed at the top of the bulletin, and is displayed in the Security Bulletin Search page. For example, for MS05-001, the maximum severity rating is Critical.

Within each bulletin, the severity ratings are further assigned by the underlying operating system. The severity rating for the issue may be different, based on which operating system is involved. These specific settings may be viewed by expanding the Executive Summary of the security bulletin. For example, for MS05-001, the severity rating for NT4, Windows 2000, and Windows XP is Critical. The severity rating for Windows Server 2003 is Moderate.

In the Protect GUI, the vendor severity rating is displayed for each patch and it is specific to the operating system or application that is installed. For NT4, Win2K, and XP systems the vendor severity rating for MS05-001 is displayed as Critical, while the same issue for WS03 is displayed as Moderate.

Microsoft Windows Update (including Microsoft Update) categorizes updates in two buckets: High Priority and Software-Optional.

The High Priority bucket includes both security-bulletin related patches and non-security patches. The Software-Optional bucket usually includes new software applications that can be installed (such as Windows Powershell and Windows Search).

Protect scans for and deploys all Microsoft security bulletin related patches. Each Microsoft security bulletin related patch is assigned a Microsoft severity rating (Critical, Important, Moderate, Low) as detailed in the security bulletin.

The severity rating in Protect properly reflects the rating assigned to the individual patches for the specified products, rather than the overall severity rating assigned to the bulletin as a whole.

Protect also scans for and deploys many of the Microsoft non-security related patches. These patches are for issues such as performance and scalability-manageability. In Windows Update, these patches are included in the High Priority bucket alongside their security counterparts. In Protect, these patches are included as non-security patches available to be scanned via the WUScan scan template, or in a custom template when non-security patches are selected.

Non-security patches, whether scanned from Windows Update or from Protect are NOT assigned severity ratings. (Severity ratings are only assigned by Microsoft for security patches referenced in security bulletins.)

Microsoft includes both security and non-security patches in their High Priority bucket. This sometimes leads to confusion when prioritizing the patches that need to be installed. Shavlik recommends that all security patches be considered for installation (after appropriate internal testing). Shavlik recommends installing non-security updates as required by the business situation. Non-security updates are not necessary to maintain the security posture of your system.

Another point of common confusion is the Update Type attribute that is displayed in Windows Update. This column displays Important or Recommended. This is commonly mistaken for the patch severity, however this is not related to security patch severity (Critical, Important, Moderate, Low). To see the security patch severity, click the update title on Windows Update, then click the corresponding More Information link to view the security bulletin and associated patch product severity rating.

FAQs

Why does Microsoft show some non-security updates that Protect does not show?

While Shavlik strives to maintain consistency with Windows Update non-security patches, there may be times when Microsoft has released a non-security patch and Protect has yet to support that patch. Protect prioritizes patches to include support for security patches first, then non-security patches. If you see a non-security patch on Windows Update that is not listed in the Protect product, submit a request at http://shavlik.featureidea.com/ and request that the patch be added.

Why does Protect show some non-security updates that Windows Update does not show?
Shavlik strives to add support for as many non-security patches as possible. This includes both those listed on Windows Update as well as those available from the Microsoft Download Center (that may not be available via Windows Update). Many times we identify (or customers ask us to support) relevant patches on the Microsoft Download Center that are not on Windows Update (which may or may not be supported by Windows Update in the future). In these cases, you may see Protect scanning for and recommending non-security patches that are not on Windows Update. As with all non-security updates, use your own judgment to determine if the specific patch is relevant to your organization and prioritize deployment of those patches accordingly.

If a Protect Security Patch and/or WUScan scan shows my system as fully patched and Windows Update shows some missing High Priority updates, is my system really \"secure\"?
Yes*. The Protect Security Patch (default) template scans for all security patches. The WUScan scan template scans for all security patches as well as non-security patches. Both of these templates identify any missing security patches that need to be installed on your system to consider it fully patched with respect to security patches. (* Secure in this sense means fully patched for security issues. Configuration settings may still be required to fully secure your system for non patch related items).

Do I need to install all non-security High Priority items recommended by Windows Update?
No. Security bulletin related patches are the most important items to install. You should install all security bulletin related patches (pending your internal testing). Non-security patches can be installed to help address specific non-security issues as the need arises. It is not necessary to install these High Priority non-security patches to be secure.

Shavlik recommends scanning with the Security Patch Scan template and apply the patches that it finds missing. Use the non-security WUScan scan template as needed to find those non-security items that you wish to install.

What if I see a non-security High Priority patch on Windows Update that is not listed in the Protect product?
Submit your request at http://shavlik.featureidea.com/.

Why does Protect show security updates that Windows Update does not show?

The Protect application scans for security updates for both Microsoft and non-Microsoft products that Windows Update Microsoft Update does not scan for. For Microsoft products, this includes items such as Office 2000, Step by Step Interactive Training, Messenger, Services for Unix, FPSE, SQL 2000 (pre SP4), ISA Server.

The Protect application also scans for security patches on non-Microsoft products such as Sun Java, Mozilla Firefox, Apple iTunes, Adobe Acrobat and Reader, Adobe Flash, Citrix, RealPlayer, and others. Windows Update does not scan for or patch these third party products.

Console Scan Results differ from Agent Scans

$
0
0

Symptoms

Agentless scan results differ from an Agent's scan results even though they are using the same scan template.

Cause

A custom scan template was setup to use the criticality filter.

The criticality filter is ignored by agent scans, this accounts for the difference in scan results between the agent and the agentless scans using the same template.

Criticality is the user supplied threat and severity level associated with a particular vulnerability, this is not the vendor criticality. Most likely these user criticallity levels are not being set by the user so it causes discrepensies in the filtered scan results.

Resolusion

When creating custom scan templates for use in both Agent and Agentless scans leave the criticality setting to scan for all.

Patch Day Checklist when using Agents

$

Checklist for patch day when using agents with Protect

1) Make sure you are signed up for the XML Announcements list. This gives you up to date information on when XML releases and what new patches have been added into the product. Whenever our data content team releases new patch definitions for Protect you will be sent an email notification.

http://www.shavlik.com/support/xmlsubscribe/

You can also see the latest patch defiintion information at these sites:

http://protectessentials.shavlik.com/

https://twitter.com/ShavlikXML

2) Once the latest XML is live make sure your Protect console is updated.  Run Tools > Refresh Files.  This will check in with XML.Shavlik.com and update any new XML and Engine files.

You can Automate this update by doing the following:

In Shavlik Protect 9: Go to Tools > Operations > Downloads. Under 'Schedule automatic downloads' choose Core engines/definitions in the drop down, then click the Add button to the left. You can then set up a schedule for the definitions to automatically download. You may also want to set up the same type of schedule for Threat Engines/Definitions.

In Protect 8: Go to Tools > Options > Definitions. Put a check next to 'Periodically download new definitions', and you can set the schedule.

3) Download patches you need to push for this patch cycle.

This step is required for agents using a distribution server for patch downloads, but is optional for agents set to download from vendor over internet.

The best way to do this is to scan a test group of machines that include all products and platforms that would be found in your production environment.  From that scan result select and download all or selected patches. Another method is to search for the patches you want within View > Patches and download any that you know are required.

4) Synchronize your distribution servers. (Not required if your agent policy is set to downlaod via Vendor over Internet.)

How to do this:

In Protect 9: Go to Tools > Operations > Distribution Servers. Under 'Distribution Servers' highlight the distribution server you wish to synchronize. You must set up a scheduled sync - in the drop-down above the recommended method is to choose 'All engines, definitions, and patch downloads'. Then click on 'Add scheduled sync'. This allows the synchronization to take place on the schedule you set up, and you will now see the synchronization jobs listed under the 'Scheduled automatic synchronization' area. If you wish to run synchronization immediately you can highlight one of the scheduled syncs, then click 'Run now'.

In Protect 8: Go to Tools > Distribution Servers > Synchronization tab.  Synch Engines and XML and Download Center. You can also enable automatic synchronization, which would take place at the same time as the schedule set up under Tools > Options > Definitions for the automatic download.

5) Update any approved patch listing in the agent policy or patch groups that are being used. If you use these methods to limit what Protect can scan for or deploy you may need to update them accordingly to contain any newly released patches.

Here are some basic instructions on how to gather console, client (target) side logs, and agent logs for Protect 8.x and 9.x.  These should work for most console and agent type issues.

Protect 9.X console logging:

1. Please open the Protect GUI and then go to Tools > Options > Logging and change logging to “All” for both user interface and services.

a. If you are unable to set logging via the GUI see this doc: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-22938

2. Close the Protect GUI.

3. Stop the Shavlik Protect Console Service.

4. Delete all the logs from

a.  Windows 7, 8, 2008, 2012 & Vista: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

b.  Earlier OS’s:  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

5.  Start the console service and open the Protect GUI.

6. Attempt to reproduce the issue. Please document steps to reproduce.

a. Collect the logs from the Logs folder mentioned earlier in step 4 (please zip if possible)

b. [Deployment issues only] On the target system please zip and send a copy of the entire C:\Windows\Propatches folder and its contents (you can leave out the Patches sub-folder).

7. Zip and send all the logs.

Purpose

This article is meant to provide information on obtaining and installing the SCAP Processor for use with VMware vCenter Protect Configuration Management (formerly Shavlik NetChk Configure).

Resolution

When a customer purchases a Government license for vCenter Protect - Configuration Management (Formerly Shavlik NetChk Configure), they are sent a download link for the SCAP Processor installation file. That link is as follows:

https://hfnetchk4.shavlik.com/downloads/SCAPProcessor_4.3.17.0.exe

The SCAP Processor guide will be integrated with the Configuration Management 'Help' documentation.

In cases where the installation of Configuration Management has failed, the steps outlined below should be followed:

1) Uninstall the SCAP processor via Windows (i.e. Add/Remove Programs).

2) Update the Configure data files by downloading the following files, copying them to the C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\NetChk Configure\XML' directory, and extracting their contents within the same directory:

vMotion breaks activation of vCenter Protect Configuration Management 4.x

Symptoms

VMware vCenter Protect Configuration Management (formerly Shavlik NetChk Configure) is successfully activated upon entering a license key, but loses its license activation.

Note: You may continue to observe this issue after reactivating the Configuration Management application.

Cause

If vCenter Protect Configuration Management is installed on a virtual machine that has vMotion in place, the vMotion process breaks the license activation for Configuration Management.

The reason for this is that our licensing depends on values that are changed during the vMotion process. We are not able to provide any further information on the values affected since it is not information we can provide publicly .

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting vCenter Protect Configuration Management 4.x.

To workaround this issue, install vCenter Protect Configuration Management on a physical machine, or on a virtual machine that is not set up for vMotion.

Additional Information

This issue does not affect current versions of VMware vCenter Protect or Shavlik Protect (patching application).

Resolution

Temporarily disable FIPS while using Protect or move Protect to a machine that is not using FIPS.

Note: It is highly recommended that a registry backup be created prior to altering

Set this dword's value to 0:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\fipsalgorithmpolicy\Enabled

Reboot the machine.

FIPS could also be controlled by GPO, if the above does not work that would be an indication that a GPO is controlling FIPS and this would need to be resolved via GPO.
