Why does MSST-001 show missing even after deployment?

$
0
0

Issue

MSST-001 shows as missing, even after deploying a patch deployment to the target.

Cause

MSST-001 is designed to always be missing.

The MSST-001 ‘patch’ is specifically used for Custom Actions and scanning for this patch type is setup in the filtering tab of the patch scan template.

Scanning for this patch type allows you to perform Custom Actions even if you are already fully patched. It does this by scanning for a specific QNumber and patch (QSK2745, MSST-001) that will never be found as installed on the target machine.

Recommendation

We recommend that you do not enable scanning for this patch type unless you are attempting to push out a Custom Action.

Resolution

Using credentials that do have 'Local Administrator' rights to the target machine should fix the scheduling error.

Shavlik Protect console certificates

$

This article is intended to provide basic information about Shavlik Protect console certificate and the first steps to troubleshoot issues thanks to the tool STMgmt.exe

Certificates information

When a Protect Console is installed for the first time, the installation process generates a public/private key pair and associates the public key with new a certificate named “ST Root Authority”. This certificate is added to the operating system as a Trusted Root Certification Authority for the Computer Account. The operating system stores the private key associated with this certificate in an encrypted state.

A “Console Certificate” is also created by generating another public/private key pair and associating the public key with a new certificate. In addition to the public key, the Console Certificate also contains details unique to the console (e.g. computer name/DNS name, etc). The Console Certificate is digitally signed by the “ST Root Authority” certification authority. The name of the Console Certificate is the Protect Console’s “ConsoleId” – a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) having the form xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx, where x represents a hexadecimal digit (0-9a-f). The operating system stores the private key associated with the Console Certificate in an encrypted state.

Troubleshoot Console certificates issues

Protect ships with a tool called “STMgmt.exe”. This tool is useful for diagnosing and correcting various certificate issues that might arise when changes to the Protect Console’s environment occur.

Command: STMgmt.exe -test_console

STMgmt.exe supports a command known as “-test_console”. This command will inspect the current console configuration (relating to certificates) and provide feedback indicating which tests passed or failed. If a user executes the command “STMgmt.exe -test_console” after Protect has been installed, a successful installation will indicate that all tests have passed.

Command: STMgmt.exe -reissue_console

Changing the console’s computer name or domain membership after Protect has been installed introduces a discrepancy between the computer’s new name/DNS name and the Console Certificate that was issued prior to the change. STMgmt.exe supports a command known as “-reissue_console”. This command will replace the existing Console Certificate with a new certificate that contains the correct, updated information.

After executing the “-reissue_console” command, run the “-test_console” command to confirm that all the tests passed.

If “-reissue_console” fails with Keyset does not exist

If the Protect Console has been installed as part of a disk image that is used for deployment, often part of the deployment process involves generating a new unique Windows Security Identifier (SID) for each system that is cloned from the disk image. The value of the SID is factored into the operating system’s algorithm for decrypting the private keys of certificates it secures. After the SID has been changed, the operating system can no longer access the private keys for certificates and will produce the Keyset does not exist error when attempting to use the “-reissue_console” command.

To resolve this situation, a new public/private key pair must be generated for both a new “ST Root Authority” and a new “Console Certificate”

STMgmt.exe could be found in the folder :

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\vCenter Protect     (vCenter Protect Advanced v8.x)

C:\Program Files\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect            (Shavlik Protect v9.x)

Purpose

This article provides steps to migrate an existing database for vCenter Protect or Shavlik Protect to another SQL server.

Resolution

Note: Before migration, ensure that Microsoft SQL Management Studio is installed on both the current database server and the destination database server. Also, ensure that no user is currently logged in to the vCenter Protect console.

To migrate the database to another SQL server:

  1. Open SQL Management Studio on the current database server.
  2. Set the Server Type field to Database Engine
  3. Set the Server name field to the name of the server hosting the database.

Note: Ensure that you are using credentials with sufficient rights to the database server to detach your Protect database.

After logging in to the database engine using SQL Management Studio, you see the Object Explorer pane on the left side of the window.
  4. Expand the Databases folder and locate your Protect database.
  5. Right-click the Protect database and click Detach.
  6. Browse to the directory where the database files are stored on the server.

Note: To find the file path, in SQL Management Studio, right-click the database and click Properties.
  7. In the window that appears, select the files in the left pane.
  8. Scroll the right pane to view the Path column.
  9. Browse to this path in Windows Explorer and copy both databasename.mdf and databasename.ldf files to the destination SQL server.
  10. Open SQL Management Studio on the destination machine and log in to the database engine.
  11. Right-click the Databases folder and click Attach.
  12. In the Databases to attach window, click Add and point it to the databasename.mdf file you copied to the server.

You should now be able to see the MDF and LDF files in the bottom pane.
  13. Click OK. The database is now attached.
  14. Link the database to the Protect installation.

To link the database to the Protect installation:
    1. Log in to your Protect console machine.
    2. Click Start> All Programs> Shavlik Protect.  Note: v.8.x will be Start > All Programs > VMware vCenter Protect.
    3. Select Database setup tool.
    4. Select the Use an existing database option and click Next.
    5. Select the server name of the new database server.
    6. In the Database Name dropdown, select your Protect database.
    7. Choose the credentials that the Protect console should use to connect to the database.
    8. Click Test database connection.
    9. If the test is successful, click Next.

The console should now be attached to this database and Protect is ready for use.

Abstract : Agent installation prerequisites can be found in the Quick Start Guide here :http://www.shavlik.com/uploadedFiles/Support/Online_Documentation/Shavlik_Protect_90/agent-quick-start-guide.pdf

Agents can be installed via multiple methods, as follows:

Console Installation - Push method

Agents can be installed from the console, in which case the configuration pre-requisites are the same as those for an agentless patch deployment. During this process, the agent machine will need to successfully resolve the console via DNS and connect to the console via TCP 3121 in order to obtain the assigned policy. An agent policy must be created and configured prior to installation. The preferred method of installation is as follows:

  • Create a new machine group.
  • Add the agent machine to the machine group by IP address.
  • Specifiy the necessary, machine specific credentials.
  • Select the machine, then select 'Install/Reinstall Agent'.

Manual Installation

Agents can be installed from the target machine, in which case the agent machine will need to successfully resolve the console via DNS and connect via TCP 3121. Additionally, valid credentials for the console machine will need to be supplied, or a passphrase will need to be supplied. In the case of a passphrase being used, the passphrase will need to have been set on the console machine via the 'Agents' tab of the 'Tools>Options' menu. An agent policy must be created and configured on the console prior to installation. The preferred method of installation is as follows:

  • Ensure that the console's datafiles have been updated successfully.
  • Copy the 'STPlatformUpdater.exe' file from the console machine to the agent machine. This file is located in the following folder :
  • C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\DataFiles
  • Login to the agent machine using credentials with administrator level privileges on the local machine.
  • Launch the installer.

If the IP address is used to specify the console URL, it will be necesarry to create an Alias for this same IP address on the console machine.

Scripted Installation

Agents can be installed using a script. This method of installation is very similar to a manual installation, with the exception that the target machine will run the installation using the 'Local System' account, and that the necessary installation options must be specified as command line switches. See the administration guide for further details outlining the necessary syntax.

Once the agent has been installed, the installer files for the necessary components will be downloaded and executed. The components installed will depend upon the configuration of the agent policy (i.e. if Active Protection is enabled, or a threat task is defined, the agent will download and install the threat engine component). The installer files, as well as all other necessary patch and data files, will be downloaded from the source as specified in the agent policy. If the agent is unable to obtain these files from the specified source, the agent will fail to perform as expected.

Logs

The installation log files can be located in any of the following locations, depending upon installation method:

C:\Windows\Temp\

C:\Windows\Temp\{stringvalue}\

%temp%\

The log files will be named as follows:

STPlatform*.log

AgentInstaller.log

Once the agent has been successfully installed, further log files (including installation log files from component installations) can be located in the agent data files (within the '...\Logs' subdirectory).

Error: "Installation Failed. A data conversion error has been detected during the database upgrade process."

Previous document reference: SKB 5607

This KB article is specific to users who encounter the following message during the installation of Shavlik Protect:

"Installation Failed.  A data conversion error has been detected during the database upgrade process."

Background
The installer will attempt to migrate old Protect data to the new database format.  During this migration process, the SQL data upgrade function may fail to complete if it encounters unexpected data.

'Unexpected data' might be encountered in Shavlik Protect databases that have been upgraded several times in the past (ex. data upgraded from 6.0 to 6.1 to 6.5 to 7.X, 7.X to 8.X etc.)

Options
There are several ways to proceed when this error has been encountered:

1.  The quickest way to get Shavlik Protect up and running is to restart the installation process.  Select the option to create a new database rather than upgrade an existing database. Make sure to select a new database name (so you don't overwrite your old database).  This will enable you to install the current version of Protect and begin performing scans immediately.  However, you will not be able to access your old scan results or console configurations until you follow the below steps.

2.  A log file is created during the DB migration process:  DatabaseConfiguration.log  Information contained in this log will assist Shavlik support professionals to diagnose the offending data element.  Please contact Shavlik Support and provide this log file as requested.  It may be possible to modify the offending data so that the database migration can continue.  If the data can be updated, you may run the 'Database Setup Tool' from the Start Menu - Shavlik folder.  The setup tool will re-run the database migration process - you may select to connect to the 'cleaned' database.  You may re-run this tool as many time as you need - this will allow you to connect to various Shavlik Protect databases without losing any data.

3.  In some instances, the Shavlik Support team may be unable to diagnose the database issue over the phone.  They may request that you send the data file to the Support team where our inhouse engineers can correct the bad data.  Shavlik recognizes that not all customers are comfortable to or are able to send their patch database to Shavlik.

4.  As a last resort, create a backup copy of the Shavlik database, then delete as many old scan records as possible.  (The offending data is most likely from an old scan result.)  Shavlik Support can provide you with a tool that will enable you to automatically delete old scan records.  You may instruct the tool to 'delete all records prior to a specified date' or 'delete all records more than X days old'.  Contact Shavlik Support to obtain this tool.

Increasing the database timeout period in Shavlik Protect and VMware vCenter Protect

$

0

Symptoms

  • Shavlik Protect or vCenter Protect report database timeout errors
  • In the ST.Protect.managed log file, you see the error:

System.Transactions.TransactionAbortedException: The transaction has aborted. ---> System.TimeoutException: Transaction Timeout

Purpose

This article provides steps to increase the database timeout value in Shavlik Protect and vCenter Protect.

Resolution

To increase the database timeout period:

Note: Ensure to close the Protect application before proceeding.

  1. In Protect 8.0 that was upgraded from an earlier version, navigate to this directory:
    1. 32bit – C:\Program Files\Shavlik Technologies\NetChk
    2. 64bit – C:\Program Files (x86)\Shavlik Technologies\NetChk
  2. In a fresh installation of Protect 8.0, navigate to:
    1. 32bit – C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Protect
    2. 64bit – C:\Program Files (x86)\ VMware\vCenter Protect
  3. In Shavlik Protect v.9.0, navigate to:
    1. All architecture - C:\Program Files\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect
  4. Locate the ST.Data.Config file and open it using a text editor.
  5. Change this entry:

    st.data commandTimeout="30"

    To:

    st.data commandTimeout="3600"

This increases the timeout period allotted for transactions with the database. This number is in seconds and you can set the number to a higher value as required. 3600 is the recommendation value for most timeout issues.
  6. To re-establish the connection, go to Start> All Programs> Protect> Database Setup Tool
  7. Select to your existing database and proceed through the tool to reconnect and automatically restart the Protect services.

Resolving database upgrade timeout failures for Shavlik Protect

$
0
0

Some customers with a large number of previous scan results and/or a slow or heavily loaded SQL server may experience a failure when upgrading their Protect database from one version to another.

Symptoms may include a message such as "database conversion error" or "database connection timeout".

There are two suggested steps to work around this issue:

1) The SQL transaction log may be significantly larger than necessary.  Using SQL Server Management Studio, verify that the transaction log for your database is set to grow or has a max size setting that is large enough (we have seen 4GB databases require 12GB for logs).  Do a FULL back up of the transaction log to force its truncation.  This is a good practice to verify that enough free disk space is available to perform the upgrade process.

It may help to review this document as well: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-2187

2) The database upgrade function may be timing out on a single command.  The default command timeout is 30 minutes.  This timeout is implemented to provide feedback in case the command is not responsive or hangs.  However, in some environments altering tables with large amounts of data may require more than 30 minutes to complete.

If the upgrade failure was related to a timeout, this timeout value can be by running the installer with an extra parameter from commandline as follows:

For instance: Shavlik Protect 9.0:  “ShavlikProtect_9.0.1182.exe  /wi:DBCOMMANDTIMEOUT=10800”

Note: The value is in seconds (10800 equals 3 hours)

How to identify if a patch is not available in a specific language

$

Purpose

You have defined in the Protect settings to download patches in two languages following this article : http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-2299

You want to know how to quickly identify if a patch is avalaible in one of the language you specified.

How to identify that information quickly

Let's say you defined to download all the patches in English and French. You want to know if the patches downloaded are available in French.

You are downloaded a lot of patches at the same time and it is not convenient for you to check via the Operation Monitor if the patches are downloaded in both languages.

First, you will have to define French as the default language for the download status indicator, as illustrated below:

1.PNG

Then, download all the patches you need.

In Patch View, you have the column "Downloaded" with the green arrow Yes and the grey one No. Please refer to the screenshots below:

2.PNG

In our example, we can see that the second patch is not available in French, the column Downloaded shows the value No.

How to download a non-english patch

$

0

Purpose

If you have the responsability to patch an heterogeneous environment made of Operatin Systems and application in different languages you will need to define the languages of the patches you will download and then deploy.

Enable other languages

If you want to enable other languages than english, you have to specify it in Options > Patch Languages

There, you specify the default languages of your patches that you will download.

1.PNG

When you have defined those settings (in our example English and French), when you download a patch Protect will download the english version and the french version if available.

Download a non-english patch

Go to the Patch View, select a patch and right-click "download".

A window will summurize the languages that were defined previously. However, if you don't want this window to pop-up each time, tick the box "Save the checked languages as the defaults".

lang1.PNG

Click Download, and you can follow the download thanks to the Shavlik Protect Operations Monitor, as illustrated below :
