Scan results fail to import in Shavlik Protect 9.x

$

0

Symptoms

  • Scan results fail to import.
  • The operations monitor stops at step '5. Wait for results'.
  • You see the error "warning: scan still running - incomplete results"
  • STProtect.managed log contains the following line:

DB connection issue error " E APAlertEventProducer.Create|Unable to connect to SQL Server 'xxx'. SqlError message: 'Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.

Resolution

Here are some things to check and/or try for this issue:

1) Check for previously imported results that are stuck in the arrivals directory. These temporary files can be deleted. They can be found here:

-On Vista/2008/7: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals

-On XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals

2) If your Protect console is installed on a 2003 or XP system, make sure the HTTP SSL service is started and automatic.

3) If you're using an Express version of SQL, make sure that the database isn't full - 10GB is the limit for SQL Express 2008R2 & newer. 4GB is the limit for older versions of SQL Express. You can use the database maintenance function in Protect to help clear up space - it can be found under Tools > Database Maintenance within Protect.

4) In Protect go to Help > Index and look up the “SQL Server Post Installation Notes” document. Follow the directions within.

5) Close Protect, Restart the Shavlik Protect Console service. Reopen Protect.

After these steps, test running a few scans and see if results show up fine now.

If results are still failing try this:

-Alternate credentials for the console service: Close Protect, then go to Start > All Programs > Shavlik Protect > Database setup tool. On the "SQL Database Configuration" screen where it shows "Choose how services will connect to the database", check mark the option to Use alternate credentials for console services. Then set the Authentication method (the most common would be Specific Windows User), then set domain admin or service credentials. Finish through the setup tool, and test scanning again.

If you still have an issue, please go through the following steps to obtain trace logs and send them to support:

-In Protect go to Tools > Options > Logging and make sure both User Interface and Services are set to “All”. Save.

-Close Protect.

-Stop the Shavlik Protect Console services.

-Delete all the logs from:

-Vista, 2008, & Win7: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

-Windows XP & 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

-Start the Shavlik Protect Console service and open Protect.

-Reproduce the error/issue.

-Afterwards please zip and send all the logs.

Shavlik Protect does not have a built in Restore from Backup utility. Use the following instructions to use SQL Server Management Studio to restore from backup:

  1. If you have not yet installed it, download and install SQL Server Management Studio.

  2. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062Restore database using SQL Server Management Studio as found in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms177429.aspx
  3. Run the Shavlik Database Setup Tool (this can be found at Start Menu > All Programs > Shavlik Protect > Database setup tool), and choose to use the existing database that was just restored from backup.
  4. Unable to install or update agent binaries in Shavlik Protect (2014715)

    Symptoms

    • Cannot install or update agent binaries in Shavlik Protect
    • Installing or updating Protect agent binaries fails
    • The agent interface installs, but the the scanning engines, such as patch, threat, and asset engines, are missing
    • The STAgentUpdater.log file returns entries similar to:

      2012-02-20T16:03:43.9185682Z 0790 W SingleFileDownload.cpp:340 Signature check failed - C:\ProgramData\Shavlik Technologies\Agent Data\protect.manifest.cab

2012-02-20T16:03:43.9653700Z 0790 E STAgentUpdater.cpp:629 Update failed with error: class STCore::CInvalidOperationException at XmlDomManagement.cpp:356: Error loading XML document from 'C:\ProgramData\Shavlik Technologies\Agent Data\Protect.manifest.xml': The system cannot locate the object specified.

    Cause

This issue occurs if there are problems when verifying the signature for agent definitions.

    Resolution

To resolve this issue the root certificates of the client (agent) machine must be updated. You can apply the updates using Protect using the following instructions:

    1. Create a custom patch scan template that includes the patch type filter Security Tools.
    2. Run a scan on the target machine and then look for the bulletins MSRC-001 or MSRC-002.

MSRC-001 is for Windows XP and 2003. For newer operating systems, such as Vista, 2008, and Windows 7, the root certificates are automatically updated if the machine is connected to the Internet. However, if you have to apply the update manually, you should be able to deploy MSRC-002 from Shavlik Protect.

Note: You cannot update root certificates on operating systems that are not within the Microsoft support lifecycle. Ensure that you are using a supported operating system and service pack level.

    Additional Information

For more information on the Microsoft root certificate program, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 931125.

Authentication Limitation with Protect 9.0+ and SQL 2005

    $
    0
    0

Users may encounter an error when installing or upgrading to Protect 9.0+ when the database resides on a SQL 2005 server.  The root cause of the issue is due to a limitation in SQL 2005.

    To reproduce this issue:

    1. Install SQL 2005, selecting the collation method to be Windows collation designator and sort order with Binary and Collation designator Latin1_General.
    2. Apply the latest Service Pack for SQL 2005.
    3. Install or Upgrade to Protect 9.0 or later.
    4. When you get to the DB portion of the install, just take the defaults.

    Expected Results:

    Installation should complete successfully.

    Actual Results

When starting the DataBase portion of the install, it fails with Error "You do not have privileges to create or view SQL login 'NT SERVICE\STConsoleSvc'. Verify the user permissions in SQL Server."

    Workaround:

Option 1:  Choose another authentication mode during the database setup wizard.

Option 2:  Manually add user NT SERVICE\STConsoleSvc to the database through SQL Management Studio.  This should be created as a Windows authentication user with the Sysadmin role.  Caveat: It cannot be done prior to installing Protect; so the user will need to add NT SERVICE\STConsoleSvc when the installation process reaches the database installer part.

Why is Shavlik Protect Patch Scan results different from Windows Update

    $
    0
    0

    Symptoms

Shavlik Protect patch scan results show different patches needed than when running a Windows Update.

    Resolution

Shavlik Protect uses different logic to scan for patches than Windows Update and other patch vendors. Shavlik uses a variety of methods to see if a target machine needs a patch.  The process is detailed in the document "Explanation of how patch scanning detection works with Shavlik Protect (2044426) http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-2259 .

Administrators can view files and registry entry criteria by searching for the patch in  View> Patches of the Shavlik Protect Console main menu.http://www.shavlik.com/support/Protect90HTMLHelp/Viewing_Patch_Details_(Patch_View).htm.

The information is located in the Registry Key and File Name sections towards the bottom of the Patch Information tab.

The Virtual Inventory feature is used to manage and track the vCenter Servers and the ESXi hypervisors (ESXi hosts) that are used in your organization.

You can use the Virtual Inventory feature to:

    • Add vCenter Servers and ESXi hypervisors to Shavlik Protect
    • View basic configuration information about the vCenter Servers and the ESXi hypervisors
    • Perform a scan of the managed and unmanaged ESXi hypervisors
    • View the security bulletins that have already been installed on the managed and unmanaged ESXi hypervisors
    • View the security bulletins that are missing on the managed and unmanaged ESXi hypervisors
    • Deploy any missing security bulletins to the ESXi hypervisors
    • Power on and off the virtual machines that reside on your managed and unmanaged ESXi hypervisors
    • Add the virtual machines and virtual machine templates to a new or existing machine group

The vCenter Servers and the ESXi hypervisors that are currently defined to Shavlik Protect can be viewed by selecting Virtual Inventory at the top of the navigation pane. The vCenter Servers list shows the vCenter Servers you are using and the ESXi hypervisors they are managing. The ESXi Hypervisors list shows the hypervisors that are not being managed by a vCenter Server. It is possible for a managed hypervisor to appear in both lists if you import the hypervisor as a standalone device and you also import the vCenter Server that is managing the hypervisor.

    Hypervisor scanning and deployment

Scanning and deployment operations are performed by the hypervisor. In order to scan for installed and missing Bulletins, the hypervisor needs the latest patching metadata files. The metadata files are available from VMware inside an archive (ZIP) file. There is a different metadata package for each supported version of ESX and ESXi. Protect supplies the target hypervisor with the URL to the proper metadata file, but in this release, the hypervisor must download the file from the internet.

    Hypervisor scanning

When scanning an ESX or ESi hypervisor with Protect, the hypervisor downloads the metadata file and performs the scan. The results are returned to Protect, analyzed and made available for display within the Console.

    Scanning process

    1. The console instructs the hypervisor to download the pertinent metadata and perfrom an assessment.
    2. The hypervisor downloads the pertinent metadata from VMware servers.
    3. The hypervisor performs an assessment using the downloaded Metadata.
    4. The hypervisor sends the assessment results to the Protect console.

    Operation details

Details of the scan operation can be found in the following locations:

    • Operation Monitor
    • Event History log
    • vCenter Event and Alert logs

Scanning and deployment operations are performed by the hypervisor. In order to scan for installed and missing Bulletins, the hypervisor needs the latest patching metadata files. The metadata files are available from VMware inside an archive 9ZIP0 file. There is a different metadata package for each supported version of ESX and ESXi. Protect supplies the target hypervisor with the URL to the proper metadata file, but in this release, the hypervisor must download the file from the internet.

    Hypervisor deployment

When the user selects the Bulletins to install, Protect will analyze the request and determine the proper bundles to be install by using the same metadata that was used by the hypervisor during the scan.

Protect gets the URLs for the bundles and passes them to the hypervisor. The hypervisor will download the bundles from VMware and perform the installation. The scan and installation processes are initiated by the Protect Console Service. Once initiated, the Scan or Deployment operation will continue even if the Protect GUI is shut down.

Deploying patches to the Virtual Environment

Help with Slow Scanning when running patch scans using Shavlik Protect or vCenter Protect

    $

    Symptoms

When running scans with Shavlik Protect or VMware vCenter Protect you have scans that take a very long time to complete. This applies when running patch scans from the vCenter Protect console (agentless scanning only).

    Notes:

For Shavlik Protect or vCenter Protect this article only applies to step number four of the scanning process (Scan for patches). If you have trouble with other steps during the scan process it will most likely be due to a different issue.

If the scans never complete this may be a different issue.

    Cause

There are many things that could possibly be causing slow scanning to take place. The first thing you should look into is if there have been any recent changes - either to the console system or the network you are on.

    Resolution

Possible issues that may need to be addressed:

Note: The "console system" refers to the system where you are running Shavlik Protect or vCenter Protect.

    1. Ensure that you are on the latest version/build of vCenter Protect.
Whenever we have a new version released there is a possibility that there may be bug fixes or product improvements which could help resolve your issue.

You can check to see what the latest version is, and download the latest version from here:

    http://www.shavlik.com/downloads/

    2. Make sure that your console system has enough power to run your scans.
If you are scanning a high number of machines you may need to increase the CPU and/or memory available to the console system. Our hardware system requirements for processor and memory are as follows:

    Processor:

    • Minimum: 2 processor cores 2 GHz or faster
    • Recommended: 4 processor cores 2 GHz or faster (for 250 - 1000 seat license)
    • High performance: 8 processor cores 2 GHz or faster (for 1000+ seat license) Memory:
    • Minimum: 2 GB of RAM
    • Recommended: 4 GB of RAM (for 250 - 1000 seat license)
    • High performance: 8 GB of RAM (for 1000+ seat license)

    3. Antivirus or real-time threat protection software may be scanning our patch scan results as they are being sent back to the Protect console system.

    Solution:

-Test disabling your antivirus/threat protection software to see if scans run faster while it's disabled.-Create an exception in your Antivirus/threat protection for the following folders:

    For version 9.x:

    On Windows 7, 8, 2008, 2012, or Vista: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals

    On Windows XP or 2003: C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals

    For version 8.x:

    On Vista, 2008, or Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\Shavlik Technologies\NetChk\Arrivals

    On XP or 2003: C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Application Data\Shavlik Technologies\NetChk\Arrivals

Notes:The arrivals folder is where Protect's scan results are sent to prior to being imported to the database.

    4. There may be network/configuration issues.
The most common issue is that high latency will cause scanning of remote systems to take a long time to complete. Things to check:-Check the latency.

On your console system run a ping connecting to a target system. The higher the latency you see from a ping, the longer you can expect the scan to take for Protect. High latency makes a large impact on scans due to the fact that our scan engine uses a separate connection for each check that is performed during DPD (Dynamic Product Detection).

Is the scan taking place over a LAN connection or WAN connection? Most often WAN connections will have much higher latency.

    Workarounds available for latency/network issues:
-If you have many machines in other areas that the console system would be scanning over a WAN connection it may be best to install a second vCenter Protect console on a system that is local to those systems. You can then scan those systems over a LAN connection rather than over a high latency WAN connection to avoid these problems.
-You can install a Protect agent on systems to avoid slow scanning issues caused by network problems. The agent will run the scan locally on the client system so it avoids all network traffic while scanning.

-There is an option to change the number of simultaneous machines scanned during the scan process. To make this change you will need to create a custom patch scan template in Protect. On the 'General' tab under General Settings you can use the slider bar to set the number of machines the scan will simultaneously run on. Dragging the bar to a lower number may help improve scan speeds. You will need to use your custom patch scan template to run a scan for this to take effect.

-It's possible it may help you to perform network monitoring during the scan. This would require a 3rd party network monitoring tool which we do not support.

    5. Possible Database Issues

You will need SQL Server Management Studio to perform some of these checks. If you are using SQL Express you will most likely need to download the free Management Studio Express from Microsoft's download site. See the links below:
    For SQL 2005 Express: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c243a5ae-4bd1-4e3d-94b8-5a0f62bf7796&displaylang=en

    For SQL 2008 Express: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en

    For SQL 2008R2 Express: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=22985

For SQL 2012 Express (Choose the management studio after clicking download): http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062

-Open Management Studio and connect to your SQL server. Expand 'Databases', and locate your 'Protect' or 'Shavlikscans' database. Right click on the database, and then go to Properties > General tab. Check the Size of your database. If your database is over 4GB in size, it's possible that you may need to perform database cleanup.

-If you are using SQL Express there is a database size limitation built into SQL. Full versions of SQL are only limited by allocated space given by the DBA or space of the hard disk. The size limitations for currently support versions of SQL Express are as follows:
SQL Express 2005: 4GB size limit per database
SQL Express 2008: 4GB size limit per database
SQL Express 2008R2: 10GB size limit per database

-Perform database maintenance. You can now easily do this from within the Protect console under Tools > Database Maintenance. If you are having slow scans take place it may help to delete as many old results as possible as well as perform the option to 'Rebuild Indexes'.-After this it may help to close Protect, go into SQL Management Studio, and perform the following steps: Right click on the Protect database and go to Properties > Options. Set the Recovery model to "Simple". Hit Ok. Then right click on the Protect database again and go to Tasks > Shrink > Database. This will help shrink the size of the database and the log file.

-It can depend if the SQL server being used is remote or local. If the database is hosted on a remote server you may need to check into your network connection between the console system and the SQL server. If there is any latency or any network issues it could cause your scans to run slow.

    6. Virtual Machine resource contention:
If you have the console running on a virtual machine make sure that the resources that the VM are trying to use are actually available in case you have other VM's running simultaneously that are possibly using all of the host server resources.
