Resolution

Start the Windows service Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) should fix your issue.

Abstract

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is a component of Microsoft Windows XP and later operating systems that facilitates prioritized, throttled, and asynchronous transfer of files between machines using idle network bandwidth. It is most commonly used by recent versions of Windows Update, Microsoft Update, Windows Server Update Services, and Systems Management Server to deliver software updates to clients, Microsoft's anti-virus scanner Microsoft Security Essentials to fetch signature updates, and is also used by Microsoft's instant messaging products to transfer files. BITS is exposed through Component Object Model (COM), making it possible to use with virtually any programming language.

Protect Console Service Crashes Frequently

Symptoms

Shavlik Protect Console Service crashes frequently and/or will not stay started.

Potential Causes

An accumulation of files in the 'BadFiles' directory or the 'NonRoutable' directory can cause the Console Service to fail to stay started.

Resolution

Navigate to the Arrivals Directory. Any files that are located within a BadFiles directory or the NonRoutable directory should be deleted.
Example:
c:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals\Patch\CryptZip\BadFiles
c:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals\NonRoutable

Verifying proxy settings for download issues in Shavlik Protect

$
0
0

Symptoms

  • You are unable to download definitions or patch files.
  • When using a proxy, download errors 403 and 407 display.
  • Errors found in STProtect.managed.log on a console system or STAgentUpdater.log file for an agent.

Note: Logs can be found in these directories:

Protect 8.x

    • Windows 7, 2008, or Vista: C:\ProgramData\Shavlik Technologies\Logs
    • Windows 2003 or XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Shavlik Technologies\Logs

Protect 9.x

    • Windows 7, 2008, or Vista: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs
    • Windows 2003 or XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

Cause

In cases where the console is installed in location that employs an HTTP proxy to access the Internet, the console services (which include data file download and sync) do not read or reference any per-user proxy address information. There is no feature to set proxy address information in the Protect user interface. You can, however, set proxy credentials. The reason is that there may be multiple users, and their configuration may or may not be correct for running services. At this time, the correct way to configure proxy addresses for console services is to add the following Xml under the base< configuration> element to either the STServiceHost.exe.config (console services) or the machine.config (machine wide) configuration file. For more information, see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/kd3cf2ex.aspx.

Resolution

If your proxy server requires authentication, go to Tools> Options and select the Proxy tab and check Use proxy and set your Console credentials . When you click Save, these credentials are encrypted and supplied to the console services for automatic file download and sync. Every time a console user performs this step, the service's proxy credentials are so updated. To configure machines with Protect Agents to use a proxy, complete the appropriate set of steps:

XP/2003

  1. Establish the proxy settings in Internet Explorer on the target machine.
  2. Ensure the proxy settings are working in Internet Explorer.
  3. Open a command prompt window.
  4. Type proxycfg without parameters to display WinHTTP proxy settings.
  5. Type proxycgf -u to transfer the Internet Explorer proxy settings.

Note: The settings should take effect on the target machine's next HTTP download attempt, and should remain in effect until you reset it.
  6. Type proxycfg -d to make WinHTTP no longer use the proxy server.
  7. Reset Internet Explorer.

x64 versions of XP/2003

  1. Establish proxy settings in Internet Explorer on the target machine.
  2. Ensure the proxy settings are working in Internet Explorer.
  3. Open a command prompt window.

Note: The Shavlik Agent uses WinHTTP to download.
  5. Type %windir%\SysWOW64\proxycfg -u to transfer Internet Explorer proxy settings.

Note: This setting should take effect on the target machine's next HTTP download attempt, and should remain in effect until you reset it.
  6. Type %windir%\SysWOW64\proxycfg -d to prevent WinHTTP from using the the proxy server.
  7. Reset Internet Explorer.

x86 versions of Vista/2008/ Windows 7/ Windows 8

Note: ProxyCfg is replaced by netsh winhttp.

  1. Establish proxy settings in Internet explorer on the target machine.
  2. Ensure the proxy settings are working in Internet Explorer.
  3. Open a command prompt window.
  4. Type netsh winhttp show proxy to display WinHTTP.
  5. Type netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie to transfer Internet Explorer proxy settings.

Note: This setting should take effect on the target machine's next HTTP download attempt, and should remain in effect until you reset it.

  6. Type netsh winhttp reset proxy to prevent WinHTTP from using the proxy server.
  7. Reset Internet Explorer.

x64 versions of Vista/2008/Windows 7/ Windows 8 / 2012

  1. Establish proxy settings in Internet explorer on the target machine.
  2. Ensure the proxy settings are working in Internet Explorer.
  3. Open a command prompt window.
  4. Type %windir%\SysWOW64\netsh winhttp show proxy to display WinHTTP proxy settings,
  5. Type %windir%\SysWOW64\netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie to transfer your Internet Explorer proxy settings.

Note: This setting should take effect on the target machine's next HTTP download attempt, and should remain in effect until you reset it.

Why Shavlik Protect Patch Scan results differ from Windows Update

$
0
0

Symptoms

Shavlik Protect patch scan results show different patches needed than when running a Windows Update.

Resolution

Shavlik Protect uses different detection logic to scan for patches than Windows Update and other patch vendors. A Windows Update scan has the ability to show missing Security Patches, Non-Security Patches, Security Tools, driver updates, and sometimes patches that aren't publicly downloadable.

Depending on what Scan Template you are using in Protect, the results will vary. The built-in security patch scan will only show missing security patches. The built-in WU scan will show missing security patches and non-security patches. And please note - we don't always include all non-security patches in our XML data right away either, as security patches take precedence.

You can always create a Custom Scan Template, and check security patches, non-security patches, and security tools for the most robust scan with Protect.

Shavlik uses a variety of methods to see if a target machine needs a patch.  The process is detailed in the document "Explanation of how patch scanning detection works with Shavlik Protect" which can be found here: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-2259 .

Administrators can view files and registry entry criteria by searching for the patch in  View > Patches of the Shavlik Protect Console main menu.

See this online help file for more information on using Patch View:

http://www.shavlik.com/support/Protect90HTMLHelp/Viewing_Patch_Details_(Patch_View).htm

There is also a difference in how Protect displays criticality and vendor severity. See this document for further information concerning this:
http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-2160

Manually downloading patch data files for Shavlik Protect and vCenter Protect consoles (2008384)

$

Purpose

When running the Shavlik Protect or VMware vCenter Protect console in a secure environment without Internet access, it is necessary to download the latest data files on a system that has internet access and then transfer them to the console machine.

This article applies only to patch data.

Resolution

This article discusses both methods:

  • PowerShell (Highly Recommended)
  • Individual file download (All Files Are Required)

PowerShell

To use the PowerShell script:

  • Download and install PowerShell 1.0 from Microsoft, if it is not already installed. For more information, see Microsoft KB article 926140.
  • Shavlik NetChk Protect and VMware vCenter Protect patch files are released twice per week. To download the patch files, you can use a PowerShell script to automate the process or you can download each file individually.
  • If you need a compression utility, download and install the 7-Zip extraction utility from http://www.7-zip.org/download.html.

Note: Shavlik does not endorse or recommend any particular third_party utility.

  • Create an output directory.
  • Download and extract the PowerShell script attached to this article: DownloadProtectData80.zip
Note: This script works for all versions of these products.

  • Open a command prompt.
  • Enter PowerShell by typing powershell.
  • Navigate to the location where you extracted the PowerShell script.
  • At the PowerShell command prompt, launch the script with this command:

    .DownloadProtectData80.ps1 "<outputdirectory>" <major or minor version> "<7-zip directory>"

Note: The command begins with the characters . before the script name. These characters are required if the script is in the current working directory. If you are in a different directory, enter the full path to the script.

The major/minor version argument has a two-digit value. Use the value corresponding to your version:

    Protect 8.0: 80
    Protect 9.0: 90

    Example:

    The command you run looks like this: .DownloadProtectData80.ps1 "C:\Data" 80 "C\:program Files\7-Zip"

    The command has these elements:
    • .DownloadProtectData.ps1: This is the script itself.
    • c:\Data: This is the folder to which you are downloading the data files.
    • 80: This is the version of vCenter Protect or Shavlik Protect files you are downloading.
  1. Type exit to leave PowerShell.
  2. Navigate to the folder containing the data files and move or copy them to the DataFiles folder on the Shavlik Protect or vCenter Protect server in the DMZ. This is the default location:

Note: If the files already exist in the output directory, they are overwritten.
    • 8.x on Vista, 2008, & Windows 7: C:ProgramData\Shavlik Technologies\NetChk\DataFiles
    • 8.x on Windows XP or 2003: C:Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Shavlik Technologies\NetChk\DataFiles
    • 9.x on Vista, 2008, & Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\DataFiles
    • 9.x on Windows XP or 2003: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\DataFiles
    1. You may see this error:

execution of scripts is disabled on this system

If this occurs, enable the execution of scripts by entering this command:

      set-executionpolicy RemoteSigned

      Note: This command is case-sensitive.

Alternatively, you can sign the script instead of changing the execution policy. For more information, see http://www.hanselman.com/blog/SigningPowerShellScripts.aspx.

Note: The preceding link was correct and last checked as of June 11, 2013.

    Individual file download

You can manually download the necessary data files. To download the files:

    1. Right-click each link and select Save Link As.
    2. Save the files to the console, in the DataFiles folder. This is the default location:
      • 8.x on Vista, 2008, & Windows 7: C:ProgramData\Shavlik Technologies\NetChk\DataFiles
      • 8.x on Windows XP or 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Shavlik Technologies\NetChk\DataFiles
      • 9.x on Vista, 2008, & Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\DataFiles
      • 9.x on Windows XP or 2003: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\DataFiles

Note: The Protect console requires both the .CAB and the files archived within the .CAB files for Protect to function correctly. The PowerShell script downloads the .CAB files, places the files in the output directory, and extract the files to the output directory. You need to manually extract the .CAB files using an archiving tool like 7-Zip if you choose to manually download the .CAB files.

Understanding patch supersedence in Shavlik Protect 9.x patch scans

    $
    0
    0

    Purpose

This article provides information on patch supersedence that affects patch scans using Shavlik Protect 9.x.

Note:  Shavlik Protect is formerly VMware vCenter Protect

    Resolution

Shavlik Protect filters out patches that have been superseded by later patches and shows only the latest applicable patch that is missing.

For example, MS03-026 is superseded by MS03-039, which is superseded by MS04-012. MS04-012 does not require MS03-026 or MS03-039 to be installed. So, Shavlik Protect shows that only MS04-012 must be installed.

When using Patch Groups, supersedence is ignored. This means that every patch in the patch group is checked even if it is superseded by another patch in that Patch Group.

To resolve this problem, old patches must be removed from the Patch Group when a newer patches replaces it. Otherwise, a supersedence issue may occur.

For example, a Patch Group containing MS03-026 and MS04-012 causes a supersedence issue. MS03-026 continues to appear in the patch scans as missing until it is removed from the Patch Group.

    Additional Information

For more information on patch supersedence, in Shavlik Protect, go to Help> Contents>Agentless Patch Management Tasks>Patch Management Overview> Determining Patch Replacements.

How to enable client/target side verbose logging for troubleshooting agentless deployment issues

    $

How to enable Client (Target) Side Logging:

These logs are automatically generated on the client (target) system during an agentless patch deployment under the folder C:\Windows\Propatches and its subfolders. However, you can enable verbose logging of these logs for a system by doing the following:

    1. In the Protect console, go to Manage > ITScripts.

    2. Under the 'Configuration' section, locate and select the script named "Set Target Machine Verbose Logging".

    3. Click the 'Approve' button at the top, or right click on the script and choose 'Approve'.

    4. Go to the machine group containing the system(s) you wish to enable this for, and click Run Operation.

    5. For "4. Select/confirm operation:", choose ITScript from the dropdown, and then select "Set Target Machine Verbose Logging" from the second dropdown.

    6. Click Run.

    7. When the operation is complete you should see the status change to "Complete: Verbose logging was successfully enabled."

See the following document for more information about this ITScript:

Here are some basic instructions on how to gather console, client (target) side logs, and agent logs for Protect 8.x and 9.x.  These should work for most console and agent type issues.

    Protect 9.X console logging:

    1. Please open the Protect GUI and then go to Tools > Options > Logging and change logging to “All” for both user interface and services.

    a. If you are unable to set logging via the GUI see this doc: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-22938

    2. Close the Protect GUI.

    3. Stop the Shavlik Protect Console Service.

    4. Delete all the logs from

    a.  Windows 7, 8, 2008, 2012 & Vista: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

    b.  Earlier OS’s:  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Logs

    5.  Start the console service and open the Protect GUI.

    6. Attempt to reproduce the issue. Please document steps to reproduce.

    a. Collect the logs from the Logs folder mentioned earlier in step 4 (please zip if possible)

    b. [Deployment issues only] On the target system please zip and send a copy of the entire C:\Windows\Propatches folder and its contents (you can leave out the Patches sub-folder).

    7. Zip and send all the logs.

    Protect 9.x agent logging:

    1. Open the agent policy assigned to the machine we are gathering logs from.

    2. Change the logging level to ‘All’ and Save and update Agents.  Choose to update agents if prompted.

    3. Go to the target machine, close the agent GUI and stop the services:

o The services start with Shavlik or ST.

    4. Delete all the logs from:

         o Vista & Later: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect

         o Earlier OS’s:  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ LANDesk\Shavlik Protect

    5. Start services.

    6. Attempt to reproduce the issue. Please note the steps to reproduce.

    7. Take applicable screenshots.

    8. Zip and send all the logs and screenshots. (from the previous specified folders above)

Deployment Logs (All current supported versions)

    (For agentless deployment)

It may be best to enable target side verbose logging before obtaining these logs. See the following document on how to do so:
    http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23048

    1. On the machine you are deploying to navigate to C:\Windows\ProPatches
    2. Locate the CL5.log, dplyevts.log, and Safereboot.log and copy to a new folder on the desktop.
    3. Navigate to C:\Windows\ProPatches\Scheduler.
    4. Locate the Scheduler.log and add it to the folder created in step 2 so all logs are together.
    5. Zip and send all the logs.

    Protect 8.X console logging:

    1. Please open the Protect GUI and then go to Tools > Options > Logging and change logging to “All” for both user interface and services.

         a. If you are unable to enable logging via the GUI see doc: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-22938

    Patch Install/Uninstall Loops

    Symptoms

    • Detected patch continues to show as missing after successfully deploying.
    • Patch that shows missing ends with 'U' every other deployment.

    Cause

Certain patches exist as an installer and an uninstaller; these patches can cause a loop when scanning and deploying. When the installation patch is deployed it makes the uninstallation patch considered to be missing. These patches are designed by their vendor in this manner to facilitate adding/removing the patch according to environmental needs. If scanning/deploying these types of patches it may appear that the patch continually is missing as it continues to add/remove per deployment. The uninstallation patch will end with 'U'. These patches tend to belong to the 'Security Tools' patch type.

    Example: Missing the Installation Patch

    Resolution

Exclude the specific patch utilizing a patch group, or choose not to deploy the patches installer/uninstaller after scanning.

    Symptoms:

This article will assist in the event that you are unable to access the properties while attempting the database shrink process on your ShavlikScans or Protect database and receive the following error message in SQL Server Management Studio: Property Owner is not available for Database [Database_Name]. This property may not exist for this object, or may not be retrievable due to insufficient rights.

    SQL.jpg

This behavior can be caused in a scenario where the database owner’s Windows Account is no longer active and as a result the database owner table is marked as “unknown”.

    Resolution:

    1. Open SQL Server Management Studio.

       2.  Connect to the appropriate SQL Server Instance and login with the appropriate credentials.

Note: This process requires SQL authentication be in place. For information on creating an SQL authenticated account please see the link below:

            http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337562.aspx

       3.  Select the Protect or ShavlikScans (the database name may vary) database from the dropdown box in the top left hand corner of the program.

    dbselect.jpg

       4.   Select the 'New Query' button.

       5.   Input the following query:

alter authentication on database::'Database_name' to 'sql_account'

Note: Replace 'Database_name' with the Protect database name. Replace 'sql_account' with your SQL username.

       6.   Click the 'Execute' button. Alternately you may also push the 'F5' key on your keyboard.

    Weak 1024-bit RSA Encryption

    $
    0
    0

    Symptoms

An external audit indicates VMware vCenter Protect is using weak RSA Encryption (1024 bit).

    Cause

Various organizations require a higher level of RSA Encryption on certificates for compliance. Older versions of Shavlik Protect (8.0.2 and lower) utilized 1024-bit encryption on certificates.

    Resolution

As of Version 9.0.1106 Shavlik Protect utilizes 2048-bit encryption on its certificates. Upgrading to the latest version of  Protect will utilize the 2048-bit encryption.

Microsoft post install issues for MS13-061 and MS13-066

Microsoft has identified customer facing issues for MS13-061 and MS13-066 and has revised support for these patches.  The Shavlik Content Team will be removing detection for MS13-061 when installed on Exchanged 2003 and MS13-066 installed for ADFS version 2.0 in the content update released Thursday, August 15th.

We suggest performing the following for customers who have already installed the affected patches:

    • MS13-061 that was applied to Exchange 2003.  Exchange 2007 and 2010 are unaffected:
    • MS13-066 applies to ADFS version 2.0 only.  ADFS version 1.0 and 2.1 are unnaffected:
      • Manually uninstall the update through Programs and Features.  Click 'Viewed Installed Updates' and locate KB2843639 and uninstall it.

Use the following to create a searchable list of all Windows Patches currently installed. This is useful when trying to identify if a specific patch is already installed.

*This log can be reliably used only to retrieve updates for Windows OS itself and its components (such asWindows Internet Explorer (IE) or Windows Server roles and features). This will not list updates for any non-inbox software (such as Microsoft Office or Exchange Server).

Note: This will create the hotfixes.txt file in the directory that Command Prompt is currently listed in.

    1. Open Command Prompt.
    2. Type wmic qfe list full /format:list > hotfixes.txt
    3. Type start notepad hotfixes.htm

    Protect Console Service Crashes Frequently

    $
    0
    0

    -On Vista/2008/7: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals

    -On XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals

    Example:
    c:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals\Patch\CryptZip\BadFiles
    c:\ProgramData\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals\NonRoutable

The following command can be ran in command prompt to delete all files within the Assets directory.

    1. Open command prompt and enter the following command replacing  {PATH_TO_ARRIVALS} with the literal path to your console system's Arrivals directory.
      • del {PATH_TO_ARRIVALS}\*.* /S /Q > C:\Deleted_Arrivals_Files.txt

    For Example:

      • del "C:\Programdata\LANDesk\Shavlik Protect\Console\Arrivals"\*.* /S /Q > C:\Deleted_Arrivals_Files.txt

NOTE: Ensure you enter the directory of the Arrivals path exactly. This command will delete all files in all subdirectories of the directory indicated. Running command line statements is done at the users own risk.
