Purpose

You may managing the machine from different country which having different different time zone. This document explains how the schedule time works when you are using it on the deployment task. You may confusing about the time either it is running on the local time or the target machine's time.

Resolution

There are 2 kinds of situation:

1. The time you scheduled is more than 24 hours.

The deployment task will be run at the local time zone. So you needs to calculate the target machine's time before you start this task.

Eg:

Local time zone is: GMT +8

Target machien time zone is: GMT+0

There will be 8 hours gap and you needs to calculated before you start the task. Otherwise the machine may need restart while the end user are actrually doing their work.

2. The time you scheduled is within 24 hours.

As the below screen shoot shows, the task will be run depending on the time zone of the target machine.

Troubleshooting issues when adding machines via Machine Group > Organizational Unit > Browse Active Directory

$
0
0
Symptoms

When attempting to add machines to a machine group in Protect via the Organizational Unit tab when clicking 'Browse Active Directory' you experience any of the followng:

-You see the message "The list of servers for this workgroup are currently unavailable".

-The OU list is missing machines that you expect to show up.

Cause

For any number of reasons the Protect application is unable to either connect to or browse active directory.

Resolution

Here are troubleshooting steps that should help:

1) Check that the "Browse Credentials" are set correctly and have access to active directory.

2) Make sure NetBIOS is enabled.

- Go into Computer Management > Device Manager.

- Click View > Show hidden devices.

- Under Non-Plug and Play Drivers locate NETBT.

- Right click on NETBT and go to Properties.

- Ensure the General tab lists this device as working properly.

- Ensure the Driver tab lists this device with a current status of Started.

3) On your Protect console system, open command prompt, and run NBTSTAT -R

This command purges the contents of the NetBIOS name cache and then reloads the #PRE-tagged entries from the Lmhosts file. The #Pre section is where domain controllers may be listed.  For more information on nbtstat commands see this Microsoft Technet article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490938.aspx

4) If you are having problems enumerating Organizational Units across domains, ensure that the Protect console has access to a DNS server that provides lookups to all involved domains.

You can edit the host file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc)

Add an entry for:

[Net Bios Name of Domain Controller] [IP Address]

or

[DomainName] [IP Address of primary DC]

5) Enable the Computer Browser service. The computer browser service is disabled by default on Server 2008 R2, but it should start without error.

See this document: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-22966

-Is there an error in the event log? This can help narrow down what is going wrong.

-The computer browser service will automatically stop if your registry settings are not configured to maintain the browse list. To verify your settings do the following:

-Go to Start> Run

-Type regedit

-Press enter

-Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

-The MaintainServerList value should be set to Yes or Auto. If this Value is No then the computer browser service will not start.

6) Check to make sure netbios ports are open. (139 & 445)

7) A couple other things that may help troubleshoot:

-Check if the "Browse Network" button in the Machine Group configuration dialog on the Machine Name tab functions as expected.

-Make sure you can browse your network (Network Places) using Windows Explorer.

Scanning a remote machine with Protect fails with Error 501 - Remote registry access denied

$
0
0

Symptoms

  • Cannot scan a remote machine with Protect.
  • Scanning a remote machine fails with the error:
Error 501 - Remote registry access denied

Cause

This issue occurs if there is a network or configuration issue which prevents Protect from connecting remotely to the target machine's registry.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

  1. Ensure that the Remote Registry service is started on the target machine(s).
  2. If you are able to log in to the machine from which you are running the scan as a user with administrative rights to a target machine, test the remote registry access.

To test the remote registry access:
    1. Click Start> Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
    2. Click File> Connect Network Registry
    3. Enter the name of the target machine as the object name and verify if you can connect and navigate to the remote registry of that machine.
  3. In the target machine(s), navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg registry key, add \"LOCAL SERVICE\" to the key, and give it the READ access.

If the preceding steps do not resolve the issue, it is possible that the policy setting is limiting access to the remote registry of the target machine(s). To resolve this issue, contact your network administrator.

Additional Information

For more information on managing remote access to the registry, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 314837.

How to Troubleshoot A Failed Patch Install

0

1604_157_49_cache.png

Symptoms

  • After deploying patches, one or more patches still show as missing.
  • While deploying, the deployment tracker lists an error.

Cause

The cause of a failed deployment can vary greatly. This document will serve as a way to troubleshoot and identify common issues that can cause a failed deployment.

Do Patches Download?

When initiating a deployment, the Console will begin by attempting to download the Patches set to be deployed.

To identify if the patch was downloaded, examine the Patch Download column within the scan results.

  • If the icon is a Green Arrow that says 'Yes', it indicates it is currently downloaded and saved in your patch repository.
  • If the icon is a Gray Arrow and says 'No', this indicates the patch is not downloaded.
  • If there is no icon, this indicates the patch is not available to be downloaded through Protect and is only available for reporting purposes.

If you are in an offline environment (i.e. the Protect console has no internet connectivity), and your patch is in the Patch Repository, but the download icon is Gray and says 'No', it may need to be renamed to the Shavlik Name.

Related Document: Patches' Shavlik Name

YES - Patches Did Download

If the patch(es) downloaded successfully, and show as downloaded in Protect (green download icon that says 'Yes'), proceed on to the next step.

NO - Patches Did Not Download / Patch is not in repository

If the patch is not located in the Patch Repository, the issue may be a failure attempting to download the patch.
To test the potential cause of the issue, navigate to the logs directory, and open the ST.Protect.Managed...Log file. This will contain the attempted download information.
Identify the entry in your log related to the patch in question.

Example:This is the entry in the ST.Protect.Managed...Log file indicating a download of  7-Zip patch: Q7ZIP920N, 7ZIP-001, Software Distribution
2013-12-17T23:49:47.4748336Z 0001 V SingleFileDownload.cs:481|Downloading from  'http://surfnet.dl.sourceforge.net/project/sevenzip/7-Zip/9.20/7z920.msi' to 'C:\Users\Nevans\AppData\Local\Temp\stb537e574-5adb-4efa-8e7d-b2a962290085.tmp'.

Troubleshooting Possible Download Issues

  • Firewall, proxy, or anti-virus settings prohibiting downloads
Try copying the URL directly into a browser to download it. Make note of any warnings or prompts that indicate a file has been blocked by firewalls, proxies, or anti-virus. If any warnings occur regarding the download being blocked, identify what in your environment issued the prompt and whitelist (allow) the patch.
  • No Internet connectivity
Try copying the URL directly into a browser to download it. If you are unable to connect to the Internet, you will not be able to download any externally hosted patches.
  • Downloads are set to a Distribution Server/Share that does not have the file available
When viewing the download entry in the ST.Protect.Managed...Log it lists the source as a local/network share. If your download source is set to a Distribution Server, the patch must exist on the specified Distribution Server to be able to download from it. If it does not exist on that share, there will be nothing to download, and it will fail.

Example:
2013-12-18T22:08:56.5798742Z 0001 V SingleFileDownload.cs:563|Download Error 'file://nevans-pc/DistributionServer/7z920.msi'.
2013-12-18T22:08:56.5803742Z 0001 V DownloadItem.DownloadFileCompleted|7z920.msi not downloaded: Connection lost: Could not find file '\\nevans-pc\DistributionServer\7z920.msi'.

To correct this, download the patch to the share, or change the download source to the vendor.
You can switch the download source by going to Tools> Operations> Downloads> Patch and Service Pack download source> select Vendor web sites to download the patches directly from the vendor.

1-download source.png
  • Vendor removed the patch from the specific url
Try copying the URL directly into a browser to download it. If you receive an error from the vendor site such as a "404 Not Found", this may indicate the patch has been moved or removed by the vendor. Verify you are using the latest Patch data by performing a Help > Refresh Files. If you are using the most up-to-date Patch data and the issue persists, please open a case with Shavlik support identifying the Patches Q#, the URL you are seeing have an issue, and the version of  Patch deployment (file on disk) as found under Help > About > Version Info.

Did Patches Copy to Target?

After the patches are downloaded, they are copied to the target machine to the directory C:\Windows\ProPatches\Patches\

YES - Patches Did Copy to C:\Windows\ProPatches\Patches\

If the patch(es) did copy to the target machine, proceed to the next step.

NO - Patches Did Not Copy to C:\Windows\ProPatches\Patches\

If the patches fail to copy to this directory they cannot be called to install.

***pushing vs target calling

Troubleshooting Possible Copy Issues

  • Does the Target have Anti Virus Software?
    • Anti Virus software may delete patches that get copied to the target based on their settings. Try disabling any Anti Virus on the target to see if the patches will copy to the target machine for installation.
  • Is the Deployment Template using a Distribution Server?
    • This can be verified by opening the Deployment Template and going into the Distribution Server tab. If 'Use Distribution Server by IP Range' is selected, verify the patch exists on the appropriate DS.
    • Alternatively, choose to use 'Console Push'. This will cause Protect to copy the patch from the Console itself, as opposed to having the target initiate a copy form the Distribution Server.

2-deployment template copy from ds.png

Did Batch File Run?

After the patches are Copied to the Target machine, a batch file that contains the necessary installation switches is also copied to the target. This file is located under C:\Windows\ProPatches\Install\. The last thing the Batch file will do after it runs, is rename itself from a .BAT extension to a .HIS extension. If the extension has changed, that indicates the patches should have all been executed (thought not necessarily successfully).

YES - Batch File Ran and Has .HIS Extension

If the Batch file has a .HIS extension, proceed to the next step.

NO - Batch File Did Not Run and Has .BAT Extension

If the Batch file still has a .BAT extension, this indicates the patches have not all finished running. There are a few reasons this might happen.
  • One of the patches is still running.
    • If a patch is still in the process of running, the batch file will not have received the return information to rename itself. This can be caused by a patch taking a long time to install (which is may not actually be a failed install, but may still be in progress). It is also possible for a patch to get hung up if the machines resources are being heavily utilized, or if the patch has received incorrect silent switches. To troubleshoot these:
      • Patch is still installing- Look for the patch in the list of active processes. End the process if found to continue to the next patch in the deployment.
        • Alternatively reboot the target, and re-deploy.
      • Patch is frozen while installing - Look for the patch in the list of active processes. End the process if found to continue to the next patch in the deployment. If the patch continues to have this behavior it may have an incorrect switch being passed to it. Ensure you are on the latest xml data by performing a Help > Refresh Files, and try deploying again. If the issue persists, contact Technical Support with the Q# of the patch, your Assessment Version and Deployment Version (located under Help > About > Version Info) and the OS of the target machine.

Errors in the CL5.Log?

When patches are executed on the target machine, they log their exit codes in the file: C:\Windows\ProPatches\Cl5.log
Open the Cl5.log file and search for the patches name. There should be an entry that looks similar to this:
2013-12-19T17:20:57.4472656Z 0e88 I CommandLine.cpp:2157 Patch Install returned 0: Patchname.exe

If the patch is installed successfully, it returns '0'.
If the patch requires a reboot, it returns '3010'.
If the patch returns any other code, it is an error and the code needs to be troubleshot. The error will typically be searchable online for what it corresponds with. Alternatively, trying to run the patch manually should give you a prompt indicating the error.

Example:
This is a successful install of the patch 7z920-x64.msi
2013-12-19T17:20:57.4472656Z 0e88 I CommandLine.cpp:2157 Patch Install returned 0: 7z920-x64.msi

NO - CL5.Log Has No Errors

If the CL5.Log file has no errors, proceed to the next step.

Yes - CL5.Log Has Errors

After finding the Patch Install Returned line and the exit code that was returned, search the error code online. Common phrasing to search the error code include 'Patch install exit code [exit code value]'
Once you have located the error associated with the exit code, troubleshoot the specifics of the error accordingly.

Example:
The patch install returned a value besides '0' or' 3010', so we suspect an error.
013-09-25T20:15:52.8975412Z 16e4 I CommandLine.cpp:2157 Patch Install returned 17025:oart2010-kb2553157-fullfile-x86-glb.exe

An online search for  'Patch install exit code 17025' locates a Microsoft article with the error message that corresponds to the error code:
17025 = Patch Already Installed

Note:
If unable to locate an associated error with the exit code found, running the patch manually will typically present a pop up with the error message. See Next Section for more information.

Error Running Patch Manually?

When a patch finishes executing it will return an 'exit code' that is logged into the file C:\Windows\ProPatches\Cl5.log (covered in previous section).
If the Cl5.log shows an exit code other than 0 or 3010, this typically indicates an error occurred. If searching online does not yield an answer to what the exit code means, running the patch manually will usually provide an error message to troubleshoot from.
To run the patch manually, on the target machine navigate to C:\Windows\ProPatches\Patches\ and find the patch to be tested. Double click the file to run it. Often times the error will be immediate upon running, where some patches require clicking through several steps before the error occurs.

Note:
If the patch does not return an error, the may install successfully. If this occurs, in order to troubleshoot why it failed to install from Protect, the patch must first be uninstalled so a reinstall of the patch via Protect can occur for testing purposes.

YES - Running the Patch Manually Returns Error/Fails

If the patch returns an error when running, get a screenshot of the exact error message (this will be needed by support in the event a ticket is opened).
Often times the error message presented offers enough information to troubleshoot from.

Example:
Looking up the exit code located indicates the cause is a full hard drive, the solution would be to clear hard drive space to allow the patch to install.

NO - Running the Patch Manually Installs Without Issue

Most patch install failures will meet one of the listed criteria. If you are not finding this to be true in your situation, it is recommended to open a ticket with Technical Support. When opening the ticket please provide the Q# of the affected patch, the Operating System of the target machine, the Patch Assessment and Patch Deployment versions located under help > about > version info, the logs from the console, and the logs from the target machine.

Purpose

Verify that an existing Microsoft SQL Database meets Pre-Requisites to use Integrated Windows Authentication to access a remote SQL Server

Description

User Account and domain pre-requisites

• The Shavlik Protect console and SQL Server must be joined to the same domain or reside in

different domains that have a trusted relationship. This is so the console and the server can compare credentials and establish a secure connection.

• For security purposes, Shavlik recommends using Windows authentication where possible.

• On the SQL Server,  verify that a machine account has been created that represents the Protect Console. It will be in the domain\machinename format. The machine account is the console's machine name and must contain a trailing $ . You should be able to see the machine account under the Security node under Logins.  If the machine account exists, right click the machine account and select Properties. Verify that Window authentication is selected and the default database is the one that you use for Protect.  Normally the database name is ShavlikScans if you created the database from a Protect 8 installation and Protect if you started with Protect 9.  If the machine account does not exist, follow instructions in the Document "Manually Configuring a Remote SQL Server to Accept Machine Account Credentials" http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23340

VerifySQLMachineAccount.gif

A machine account representing the Protect Console must also exist for the specfic Protect database.

Manually Configuring a Remote SQL Server to Accept Machine Account Credentials

Purpose

How to manually configure a remote SQL Server to accept machine account credentials

Description

Manually Configuring a Remote SQL Server to Accept Machine Account Credentials

Note: The manual process described here is required only if the automated account creation process failed during product installation.

If you are using Integrated Windows Authentication to access a remote SQL Server, in order for Shavlik Protect to interact properly with the server you must configure the server to accept machine account credentials. The best time to do this is immediately after you have installed Shavlik Protect but before you actually start the program. You can, however, perform these steps after starting the program. Any scans you initiate prior to this that require interaction with a remote SQL Server database will probably fail.

This section describes how to configure a remote SQL Server to accept Windows authentication (machine account) credentials from the Shavlik Protect console. For security purposes, Shavlik recommends using Windows authentication where possible. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio is used as the editor in the following examples but you can use a different tool if you prefer.

  1. The Shavlik Protect console and SQL Server must be joined to the same domain or reside in different domains that have a trusted relationship.

This is so the console and the server can compare credentials and establish a secure connection.

  1. On SQL Server, create a new login account for Shavlik Protect to use.

You must have securityadmin privileges in order to create an account. To do this: Within the Security node, right-click Logins and select New Login. Type the login name using a SAM-compatible format (domain\machine name). The machine account is your console's machine name and must contain a trailing $.Note: Do not use the Search option. You must manually type the name because it is a special name.Make sure you choose Windows Authentication and that the Default database box specifies the Shavlik Protect database. For example:

  1. For your Shavlik Protect database, create a new user login using the console machine account.

Right-click the Users folder, select New User, browse to find the Login name, and then paste the name in the User name box. Assign the user the db_datareader,db_datawriter, STCatalogUpdate, and STExec roles. For example:

  1. Start Shavlik Protect.
  2. Perform any troubleshooting as necessary.
  • You can use the SQL Server activity monitor to determine if connection attempts are successful when performing a patch scan.
  • If you ran Shavlik Protect before creating the SQL Server user account, some services may fail to connect to SQL Server. You should select Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and try restarting the services.
  • If the connection attempts are failing you can view the messages in the SQL Server logs to determine why the failures are occurring.

Additional Information

Allowing Other Users Access to the Program

Note: This section also applies if you are using the role-based administration feature.

If you wish to allow other users access to the program, you may need to configure SQL Server so that those users have the necessary database permissions. Specifically, when using Windows integrated authentication, users without administrative rights on the database machine must be granted read and write permission to all tables and views. They must also be granted execute permission to all stored procedures in the Shavlik Protect application database. They may not otherwise be able to start Shavlik Protect.

One way to grant these permissions is to assign your users the db_owner role. For security reasons, however, this may not be the best solution. A safer alternative is to grant execute permission at the database level. You do this by assigning the users in question to the STExec role.

Symptoms

Shavlik Protect Event History displays the following error when trying to backup the Protect database in Database Maintenance: Generic data access layer exception. SQL exception message: Cannot open backup device [\\UNC Path of bak file location] Operating system error 5(Access is denied.)

Cause

User that is connecting to SQL database does not have access to the specified UNC Path

Resolution

Modify connection information in Protect and/or modify rights to the unc path used for the backup location.

Step 1 Determine what SQL user is accessing the database Share

From the Windows Start Menu, Open the Protect Database Setup Tool

Start>All Programs>Shavlik Protect>Database Setup Tool

Select Use an Existing Database and click Next

Verify the credentials that will be used to access the Database

SQLDatabaseConfig.png

If Integrated Windows authentication is used for both interactive users and services connections the user name used will be the Domain\MachineName$ of the console machine. Otherwise note the credentials used in the User Name: field of "Choose how interactive users will connect to the database" or if "Use alternate credentials for console services" is checked, the User Name: field under "Choose how services will connect to the database.

Step 2.

From the SQL Machine attempt to access the UNC path using the credentials obtained from Step 1

The UNC path of the database backup is defined under Tools>Operations>Database Maintenance in the Protect Menu.  If a local drive letter is specified, it will look for the local drive letter on the SQL server, not the Protect Console.

Template

1604_157_49_cache.png

Purpose

This document outlines how to locate the Shavlik Protect license activation key in the console and transfer this key to a new or additional Protect console.

Description

When migrating to a new Shavlik Protect server or setting up an additional Protect console machine- understanding where to find the license key and how to input it in to the new console is vital to maintaining Shavlik Protect functionality through this transition. As this process may not frequently performed by administrators, a reference/guide for this process may prove to be helpful.

Locating the License Key on Existing Protect Console

Follow the process below to obtain your license key from your console machine. After locating the key in order to prepare to transfer the key to the new console machine, copy this 25-digit license key and make it readily available.

In Shavlik Protect 9.x:

     Help>About Shavlik Protect Advanced

protect9_1.bmp

In the About Shavlik Protect window, the license key can be found in the main text display under

     License Key:

          Activation Key: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Protect9_2_1.bmp

In vCenter Protect 8:

This process is nearly identical to the process in Shavlik Protect 9.x. Refer to the images above.

To locate the license key follow this path:

          Help>About VMware vCenter Protect

In the About VMware vCenter Protect window, the license key can be found in the main text display under:

          License Key:

               Activation Key: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Activating the License Key in New Console

Activation is the process by which the Protect software is validated as having been purchased.  In order for the new Protect console to fully function activation is required. Users are prompted after installing and opening Shavlik Protect to input their activation key, through the Shavlik Protect Activation window.

Protect9Install_1.bmp

To transfer the license key from your previous console machine follow the directions in the window as ordered by number:

     1. Select an activation mode (on left portion of window)

          Select "Product or bundle license"

     2. Enter your activation key(s) (in center of window)

In the text field below, paste or manually input your 25-digit Protect license key

Click the "Add" button right of the text field.

     3. Select activation method (lower-center of window)

Choose "Online activation" if you have an internet connection.

Click "Activate online now"(at the lower-right corner)

If you require "Offline activation" see the following article- http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-23010

If the software was previously launched and activated by selecting Trial mode, this window can be accessed through Protect by navigating to:

Symptoms

Error Message while attempting a asset scan
[Machine Name] Cannot connect to WMI Service. It might be stopped or firewalled "Cannot connect to WMI Service.

Cause

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service is Disabled/Off.

The neccessary ports for an Asset scan are not accessible from the Protect Console to the Target Workstation.

The Protect Console cannot perform proper DNS resolution to the target workstation.

The DNS server contains multiple reverse lookup entries for the same IP Address

Resolution

WMI Services must be started for hardware asset scanning

Make sure IP Addresses are unique for target workstations in both the forward and reverse DNS Domain lookup

When performing an asset scan, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service must be enabled on the target machine and the protocol allowed to the machine (TCP port 135).

In addition to the WMI port, other ports are necessary for an Asset scan to work properly.  Refer to the following document, Port Requirement for Shavlik Protect: http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-2161

Database Connection Error Caused by Missing SQL Server

$
0
0

shavliklogo.png

Symptoms

  • Attempting to launch Shavlik Protect fails and returns with the following error:

"The database connection could not be made. This may be caused by a temporary interruption in the database server, or the machine hosting the database could have been renamed."

Error window.PNG

  • Selecting "Launch the database configuration utility" and attempting to reconnect to SQL Server and Protect database fails, returning with error:

"Failed to connect to SQL Server '(sql server path)'. Please verify the SQL name and credentials>"

Failed to connect dbconfig.PNG

  • After verifying SQL server credentials user receives same error message.

Cause

This issue will occur if the SQL Server previously on the machine has been removed. Without the SQL Server installed on the console machine, despite retaining the Protect database, Protect will be unable to function. Some users may inadvertently uninstall the server software without being aware that doing so will not permit Shavlik Protect to run. Doing so will not delete the Protect database and Protect should be able to function again after reinstalling and configuring the SQL Server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue you must:

  1. Reinstall Microsoft® SQL Server Management Studio® software (the Protect installer installs SQL Server 2012 Express by default)

   2.  Reattach the Protect SQL database to the SQL server.

The remainder of this document will provide in-depth instructions on how to perform these tasks to resolve the database connection error.

Installing the SQL Server

If you will be using an Express Edition of Microsoft SQL Server, you should consider downloading and installing Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. This free software can be used to perform backups and to manage your database. Additionally, it will make the process of reattaching the Protect database to the SQL server much simpler.

If you would like to follow the resolution outlined in this document, SQL Server Management Studio is required.

The Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Express installer can obtained for free at the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062

To install both the SQL Server and the Server Management Studio Express, install the package containing the SQL Express Server and SQL Server Management Studio.

After installation, Protect will still not launch, attempts to reconnect to the SQL server will return with this error:

"The database 'Protect' does not exist on the SQL Server  Please verify your configuration"

databasedoesnotexist.PNG

This error indicates that the protect database must be reattached to the SQL Express server, the easiest way to do this is through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. This process will be outlined in the next section of this article.

Reattaching the Protect database to the SQL Express Server

To reattach the Protect database to the SQL Express Server, open SQL Server Management Studio.

SQL Server Management Studio can be opened by following this path:

Start->Micrsoft SQL Server 2012->SQL Server Management Studio

The "Connect to server" window will appear at launch.

SQLMS-Connect.PNG

For most users- including all who originally installed SQL Express through the Protect install package- none of the fields need to be modified.

Simply click connect to proceed to the next step in the process. Doing so will close the dialog box.

The SQL server should now be visible on the left in the Object Explorer pane. If the Databases subfolder is not visible, click the plus sign to the left of the entry containing the server path to display the server contents.

ServerManagementStudio-db.PNG

Right click this Databases directory and click "Attach..."

SQLattach.bmp

An "Attach Databases" dialog box will open.

attachdatabases.PNG

Click Add in the right-center of the window to proceed. Doing so will open the Locate Database Files window.

locatedbfiles.PNG

Left-click the Protect.mdf file, which is located under DATA, then click OK.

This will attach the database file and close the window.

Click OK again to exit the Attach Databases window.

In the Object Explorer pane, the Protect database should now be visible, demonstrating that the Protect database has successfully been attached to the SQL Express server.

After completing these steps, the SQL Server should be configured properly to allow the Protect console to function as before. Opening Protect should launch the program without any of the previous errors. Protect should require no more additional configuration to resume functional operation.

Note: After the completion of these steps, if any further difficulty is encountered in attempting to connect to the database by Protect, use the Database Setup Tool to make sure that Protect database is configured properly. This can be located by going to:

Start->Shavlik Protect->Database Setup Tool

Troubleshooting patch scans that do not list Java patches as missing or installed

Symptoms

You are able to manually verify a Java installation exists on a target (client) system, but a patch scan with Protect does not list a Java patch as missing or installed.

Cause & Resolution

There are three likely causes for this issue that should be evaluated first:

  1. Verify the patch definitions for Protect are up to date by running Help > Refresh Files. You can verify the version of the patch definitions by going to Help > About > Version Info.  Look for Patch Assessment under the Definition area and then cross reference the version with this website http://protect7.shavlik.com/category/patch-and-bulletin-information/
  2. Use a built-in patch scanning template (Security Patch Scan or WUScan template) when troubleshooting scan related issues. If not using the Security Patch Scan or WUScan template, verify the custom scan template does not include filtering that would limit what patches and products scanned.
  3. If you believe the Java patch is installed, manually verify the Java patch is listed as installed in Add/Remove Programs (Programs & Features).

Is Java Development Kit installed on the target (client) system? If Java Development Kit (JDK) is installed on the target system, you cannot patch Java on the system. The reason is that we do not support patching JDK, and we do not offer updates even for JRE in this instance because applying the JRE update will break JDK on the system. Another possible cause of the issue is a corrupt install of Java on the target (client) system.

The Shavlik Protect scan engine's detection logic verifies the version of the jvm.dll and java.exe files on the target machine. The scan engine determines the location of these files based on information stored in the registry on the client system. A scan issue occurs if the file location listed in the registry key does not match where the files are located on the system. You can manually verify this by navigating to one of the following registry location using regedit:

  • 32 bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment
  • 64 bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment

Navigate to one of the versions of Java listed under this key, then for each version there will be a "RuntimeLib" key. The value of the RuntimeLib key contains the location that we check during our patch scan process.

You can also perform a search for jvm.dll and/or java.exe on your system. If the files are not located in the directory specified in the value of the RuntimeLib registry key then you may have a bad install of Java. The best way to correct this is to manually apply the next Java patch or reinstall Java on the system.
